The Snail Who Won a Race

By Remy

It starts with a little idea…

Remy (child)“Snail. He wins. But he goes like this… really slow.”

Parent“Who’s he racing?”

Remy (child)“Another snail. A stripy one. Mouse says ready, steady, go.”

An imagined conversation between Remy, age 3, and a parent.

Two little snails are ready to race. Then a big leaf falls across the path. Can Snail find a way through? Open the book and cheer them on.

Having a go

“Let’s have a race,” said Mouse one day. Two little snails slid out to play. One had a shell of golden brown. He looked ahead. He looked back down. “I’m very slow,” he whispered low. “But I would like to have a go.”

Ready, steady

Mouse tied some grass from stem to stem. The meadow friends stood next to them. Two daisies marked the place to go. “Ready… steady… off you go.” Both snails slid forward, slow, slow, slow.

A little further

The stripy snail slid on ahead. “I’ll keep on going,” Snail said. He slid past clover in a row. A little further. Slow, slow, slow.

The falling leaf

A big brown leaf came floating down. It covered Snail’s little patch of ground. He could not see the daisies now. “I want to get out. But how? But how?”

A little gap

Snail saw a gap beside the stalk. It was too low for feet to walk. He tucked his feelers, nice and low, and slid beneath it, slow, slow, slow.

Nearly there

The stripy snail went round the edge. Snail slid towards the daisy hedge. They both could see the ribbon sway. The finish wasn’t far away.

The finish

Snail stretched his feelers towards the sun. His shell crossed first. The race was won. “Well done,” said Mouse. “We watched you go. You kept on sliding. Slow, slow, slow.”

Two happy snails

The other snail slid through the grass. Snail moved aside to let him pass. They shared a leaf when they were done. A little rest. A little sun. Then home they slid, in evening’s glow. Two happy snails. Slow, slow, slow.
