The Sleepy Lighthouse

By Nell

It starts with a little idea…

Parent“What shall our story be about?”

Nell (child)“That light. Sleepy.”

Parent“The lighthouse? Who wakes it up?”

Nell (child)“Whale. Splash! Wake up, light.”

An imagined conversation between Nell, age 2, and a parent.

The lighthouse is sleepy, but a little boat needs his light. Gull tries a tap. Whale tries a splash. Will their friend wake up?

A sleepy friend

Beside the sea, above the bay, the lighthouse blinked the day away. He’d shone all night across the deep. Now all he wanted was some sleep.

Time to shine

The sun sank low. The moon shone bright. The lighthouse had to shine tonight. He shut his eyes. His light went dim. A little gull looked up at him.

Tap, tap, tap

Gull tapped the glass: tap, tap, tap. “Wake up. It’s not the time to nap.” “Not yet,” he said. “I need some rest.” Gull found the friend she liked the best.

A little boat

A boat is coming through the bay. It needs our light to show the way. Gull told Whale, who swam in near. “Let’s wake our sleepy friend up here.”

One little splash

Whale splashed the wall. He splashed the door. The lighthouse murmured, “Just once more…” Whale sent one little splash up high. It tickled near the lighthouse eye.

A-A-CHOO

“A-A-CHOO!” He sneezed out loud. His warm light shone beneath a cloud. The boat sailed safely through the bay. The shining light had shown the way.

Goodnight, friends

All night he shone across the foam. The little boat was snug at home. “I’ll have my nap when night is through. Goodnight, dear friends. Sleep soundly, too.”

A nap at last

The morning warmed the lighthouse wall. “Shh,” whispered Gull. “No noise at all.” Whale floated quietly in the deep. Their shining friend could have his sleep.
