A noise in the wood

Little Fox was out at play when something made him jump away. “GRRR-RUMBLE… RUMBLE… ROAR!” The noise came through a tiny door.

The tiny door

The door was in a mushroom stalk. Fox tiptoed down the little walk. He pressed his ear against the door. “GRRR-RUMBLE… RUMBLE… ROAR!”

Who is inside?

“Is that a bear asleep in there? A great big bear with shaggy hair?” Fox knocked once, then twice, then three. “Hello? Who’s there? It’s only me.”

The handle shakes

The little handle gave a shake. Fox whispered, “Now the bear’s awake.” He took one tiny step away. The door swung wide. What would it say?

A very small surprise

A little nose. A little squeak. A sleepy mouse came out to peek. “Was that you?” asked Fox. “That roar?” “Oh, yes,” said Mouse. “That’s how I snore.”

Come in

“But you’re so small,” said Fox. “And yet, you’re louder than a bear, I bet.” Mouse gave a grin. “Come in and see. There’s room beside the bed for tea.”

A sleepy nose

They had some tea. They had some bread. Then Mouse began to nod his head. His eyelids closed. His whiskers shook. Fox leaned in for a closer look.

The roar returns

“GRRR-RUMBLE… RUMBLE… ROAR!” Fox nearly tumbled to the floor. Mouse woke up. “Oh, dear,” he said. “I think I’d better go to bed.”

Time for bed

Fox tucked the blanket round his friend. Then curled up at the other end. The mushroom house was warm and deep. Soon Little Fox was fast asleep.

Two little snores

Now two small noses twitched once more. Then two loud snores shook that small door. “GRRR-RUMBLE…” “RUMBLE… ROAR!”
