A story to step inside

Bear Is Asleep

By Ella

It starts with a little idea…

Parent“You keep pointing at the sleeping bear. Shall we make a book about him? Maybe a little mouse comes to see if he wants to play.”

Ella (child)“Bear.”

Parent“Is he still asleep?”

Ella (child)“Shh.”

An imagined conversation between Ella, age 1, and a parent.

Mouse wants to play, but Bear is still asleep. Tiptoe to his snowy little home and find out what finally wakes him.

Through the snow

Mouse tiptoed through the snow. “Are you awake?” she whispered low. Bear was asleep.

Tap, tap, tap

She tapped upon the stony wall. Tap, tap, tap — no stir at all. Bear was asleep.

A little snap

A little twig went SNAP outside. Bear gave a snore. Mouse crept inside. Bear was asleep.

A tiny sneeze

One snowflake landed on her nose. “A-tishoo.” Bear woke from his doze. “Mouse?”

Come and play

“Come and play,” said little Mouse. “It’s cold outside our cosy house.” Bear lifted up his quilt.

Warm together

Mouse cuddled close. Her paws were warm. The quilt was soft beside Bear’s arm. “Let’s play later,” Mouse said. Soon they were both asleep.
