No fear at all
Goat stood on a rock and shouted, “I have no fear at all!” Bear looked up. “Then will you come to the lake with me?” “Of course!” said Goat. “I can go anywhere.”
The short way
The short way to the lake went through a tunnel. Bear peered into the dark. Goat stamped one hoof. “Nothing in there can frighten ME!” He took a big breath. “BAA!”
A voice in the mountain
“BAA!” roared the tunnel. Bear jumped behind Goat. Goat jumped behind Bear. For a moment, they both tried to hide behind each other. “Who said that?” whispered Goat.
Wobbly knees
Goat’s knees went wobble-wobble. His scarf went flutter-flap. “I’m not afraid of mountains,” he said. “But I don’t like whoever lives in that one.” Bear listened. Drip. Drip. Nobody came out.
A smaller hello
Bear called softly, “Hello?” “Hello?” said the tunnel. Goat blinked. “That one sounded rather like you.” Bear tapped a stone. Tap. Tap, answered the tunnel.
The answer
Bear grinned. “It’s our sound coming back!” Goat tried a tiny bleat. “Baa?” “Baa?” came the answer. “There isn’t a great big goat in there,” said Bear. “Only your great big voice.”
Together
Goat looked at his hooves. “I was a little bit afraid.” “So was I,” said Bear. “Shall we go together?” asked Goat. Side by side, they followed the path. A circle of sunshine grew ahead. There was the lake!
A very big voice
They sat by the lake and ate their lunch. “I have a very big VOICE!” sang Goat. His song came back from the mountain. Bear laughed. “And a little bit of fear?” “Sometimes,” said Goat. “But I’ve got you.”
